An interlinked coastal observatory network for Europe ArchiMer
Sparnocchia, S.; Nair, R.; Petihakis, G.; Aydogdu, A.; Dobricic, S.; Farcy, Patrick; Martinelli, M.; Petersen, W.; Petit De La Villeon, Loic.
Existing coastal observatories in European waters are complex systems consisting of different observational components, providing crucial operational data for assessment, model validation and assimilation purposes. However, the geographical, structural, functional and operational heterogeneities that characterise them pose an enormous challenge to their efficient exploitation as information providers on a broader, cross-border, regional scale. To address this problem, the European Union (EU) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) Towards a Joint European Research Infrastructure Network for Coastal Observatories (JERICO) project is creating a shared, pan-European framework for the networking of such observatories, promoting the identification and dissemination...

Cartographie des Sciences et Techniques de la Mer dans la recherche publique française : un premier inventaire. Synthèse ArchiMer
Moulinier, Hervé; Vernet, Marine; Dosdat, Antoine; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Le Gall, Morgane; Ibarra, Doriane; Meillon, Julien.

Collecting and gridding complementary in-situ SST/SSS data for the calibration and validation of SMOS ArchiMer
Brion, Emilie; Gaillard, Fabienne; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Delcroix, Thierry; Alory, Gael; Reverdin, Gilles.
Providing reliable in-situ surface temperature and salinity data over the global ocean within short delay is critical for the calibration and validation of the recently launched Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Satellite (SMOS). The work presented here has been undertaken as a contribution to GLOSCAL (Global Ocean Surface Salinity Calibration and Validation), retained as one of the ESA CalVal Projects. Based on the Coriolis datasets and using In Situ Analysis System (ISAS) tool, a near real time analysis system has been developed. It provides gridded fields of sea surface salinity and temperature and the corresponding in-situ dataset. In addition to research activities, these products would be used to help the quality control of SMOS satellite data, and to...

Coriolis, a French project for operational oceanography ArchiMer
Pouliquen, Sylvie; Carval, Thierry; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Gourmelen, Loic; Gouriou, Yves.
The seven French agencies concerned by ocean research are developing together a strong capability in operational oceanography based on a triad including satellite altimetry (JASON), numerical modelling with assimilation (MERCATOR), and in-situ data (CORIOLIS). The CORIOLIS project aims to build a pre-operational structure to collect, validate and distribute ocean data (temperature/salinity profiles and currents) to the scientific community and modellers. The four goals of CORIOLIS are: • To build up a data management centre, part of the ARGO network for the GODAE experiment, able to provide quality-controlled data in real time and delay modes; • To contribute to ARGO floats deployment mainly in the Atlantic with about 300 floats during the 2001-2005...

The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) provides regular and systematic reference information on the physical and biogeochemical ocean and sea-ice state for the global ocean and the European regional seas. CMEMS serves a wide range of users (more than 15,000 users are now registered to the service) and applications. Observations are a fundamental pillar of the CMEMS value-added chain that goes from observation to information and users. Observations are used by CMEMS Thematic Assembly Centres (TACs) to derive high-level data products and by CMEMS Monitoring and Forecasting Centres (MFCs) to validate and constrain their global and regional ocean analysis and forecasting systems. This paper presents an overview of CMEMS, its evolution,...

Operational oceanography in France : the Coriolis project ArchiMer
Coatanoan, Christine; Carval, Thierry; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Autret, Emmanuelle; Gouriou, Yves; Gourmelen, Loic.
An operational oceanographic system is being developed in France to monitor and forecast ocean behavior. It is composed of three projects: - Sea-surface observation using satellite sensors, - ln situ measurements from ships, moored or drifting autonomous systems, - Assimilation of in-situ and satellite data in an ocean circulation modal. Coriolis contributes to the in situ part of this system, with the objective of developing continuous, automatic, and permanent observation networks. The data collected will enable water properties to be mapped, such as temperature, and ocean circulation. (NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Product user manual. For REProcessed IN SITU product (WAVES) ArchiMer
Petit De La Villeon, Loic; De Alfonso, Marta; Manzano-muñoz, Fernando; Pouliquen, Sylvie.
This Product User Manual describes the reprocessed wave dataset called INSITU_GLO_WAVE_REP_OBSERVATIONS_013_045 distributed by the CMEMS In Situ Thematic Assembly Centre: how it is built, what is the content, what data services are available to access them, and how to use the files. The INS-TAC is a distributed system built on the existing activities and services developed previously within the EU supported projects (MyOcean, Mersea, MFSTEP, FerryBox, SEPRISE ...) and EuroGOOS Regional alliances (ROOSes). It aims at providing a research and operational framework to develop and deliver in situ observations and derived products based on such observations, to address progressively global but also regional needs either for monitoring, modelling or downstream...

« Sciences et Techniques de la Mer », un inventaire national quantitatif et qualitatif des ressources publiques de recherche ArchiMer
Moulinier, Hervé; Vernet, Marine; Dosdat, Antoine; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Le Gall, Morgane; Ibarra, Doriane; Meillon, Julien.
Whatever their geographical or political point of view, Sea and coastal strategies highlight an “abyssal need” for knowledge and frequently call for a reinforcement and a better valorization of research in Marine Sciences and Technologies (MST). But, when a French public research resources inventory is needed, in the perspective of constructing a consistent action plan, we lack a framework to define thematic and disciplinary perimeter to be taken into account, to identify available data, to choose practical evaluation or estimation methods. The following study is a proposal to answer these questions. The methodology is mainly based on data collected by French High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres) and completed by an inquiry....

The role ships play in atmospheric, oceanic, and biogeochemical observations is described with a focus on measurements made near the ocean surface. Ships include merchant and research vessels; cruise liners and ferries; fishing vessels; coast guard, military, and other government-operated ships; yachts; and a growing fleet of automated surface vessels. The present capabilities of ships to measure essential climate/ocean variables and the requirements from a broad community to address operational, commercial, and scientific needs are described. The authors provide a vision to expand observations needed from ships to understand and forecast the exchanges across the ocean–atmosphere interface. The vision addresses (1) recruiting vessels to improve both...
